Time to actually start Blogging! My Top Ten Favorite Songs, cause I feel like it!

10. In One Ear, Cage the Elephant- This song is on here because I love the message: “Fuck Critics, they just don’t get what we’re about.” It’s a simple message but one that almost every musician loves to yell at the top of their lungs. Music isn’t about getting people to like you, quite the opposite in some ways, it’s about embodying a feeling and relaying a message.

9. All Along the Watchtower, Jimi Hendrix (originally written by Bob Dylan)-3 reasons why I love this song: 1. Whenever someone tells me “covers suck” I play this song and half the time they don’t even realize that it was originally played by Bob Dylan.   2. This song is an awesome jam song. 3. Beeeowwww…. Bowooooooo… Doo, Doo. God I love that part.

8. The Legend of Zelda Main Theme, Koji Kondo (I think I spelt that right)- Nostalgia is a bitch. If you don’t know this song and aren’t humming it in your head right now you had a deprived childhood. Despite the fact that I know my love for this song is driven by pure nostalgia I had to put it on this list cause it has a special place in my heart.

7. Because (Love Edition), The Beatles- Anybody who wants to sing in a chorus should learn how to sing this song. I have selected the Cirque du Soliel Love version of the song because my favorite part of the song is all that is in the Love version: the harmonies. No drums, no guitar, no bass, no piano, no keyboard, nothing but the vocal track and some birds chirping in the background. Just beautiful harmonies which can be rivaled only by Simon and Garfunkel.

6. Sam Malone, City and Colour (it’s Canadian bitches! Look at the u!)- I was never into Indie music until I went to a City and Colour concert with my friend. Ever since then my musical taste has expanded exponentially, my wallet and computer space can’t keep up with my musical interest anymore. Why Sam Malone? Because I love the intro, I love the chord progression and I have no sweet clue what the song is about so it intrigues me.

5. Sultans of Swing, Dire Straits- Sultans of Swing is a song without boundaries. Its style and chord progression mean that solos can be played in any style making it one of the best songs to learn if you want to extend your capabilities. Not only that but the main riff kicks ass and the recorded solo has basically every riff a guitarist would ever need to be successful in any genre.

4. Somebody to Love, Queen- Freddy Mercury is probably the best singer who ever lived in my books and this song lets him show off his talent and has the added perk of having some of the coolest harmonies ever. Through in a couple crescendos and decrescendos, a sweet solo and some amazing piano playing and you have yourself a Queen-worthy song.

3. Beer (Live), Reel Big Fish- This song gets me pumped up! Its incredibly catchy, has a sad but ultimately cool story and a fantastic bass line. This song cheers me up every time I hear it, that’s the reason it’s #3 on this list.

2. Don’t Stop Believin’, Journey- I’m not even going to explain this one, everyone knows this song and whoever doesn’t should be shot. Steve Perry is a God.

1. Hotel California, Eagles- This being at #1 doesn’t really feel right. I feel like a different song should be on top, not because this is a bad song but just because it’s nothing like anything I listen to on a regular basis. I love this song, every single version of it, live, recorded, unplugged, I love them all. I know every single word, chord change, every single little nuance in at least 3 separate versions. I love this song so much I even sing along to the solo. The lyrics are fantastic, the harmonies are unmatched, the solos are the most recognizable and iconic solos ever recorded. And as a final little kick it has a special place in my heart and thus gains a little nostalgia as a bonus. This is absolutely my favorite song.
